Tonight the bonfires will be lit all over the Six Counties. They will burn long and deep into the night and morning of the 12th. What they celebrate is a little harder to get your head around in 2015. Do they celebrate the victory of King William over King James at the Boyne in 1066? Do they celebrate the Protestant faith? Do they celebrate the fact that Ulster is still linked to the crown? Or is tonight and tomorrow just a people clinging to something that is no longer revenant? Is it a celebration or an act of defiance? Does it benefit anyone except pallet makers, breweries and the makers of Irish Tricolours to burn? I am not sure of the answers to any of these questions. I do know this those who light the bonfires tonight probably never go near a church, live pretty much the same lives as their Catholic and Nationalist counterparts. They live in streets much to same, have trouble getting jobs, education and ever making it out of those same streets. Their loyalty may be important to them but I wonder how much it has ever brought them or will bring them. Seems very sad to me to build a culture based totally on hatred.
The mad story of the day is this one from that esteemed publication The New York Post.
“Blue Bloods” actor Tom Selleck has been stealing water from a fire hydrant — presumably to irrigate his sprawling ranch and avocado farm in drought-parched Southern California, authorities said.
Selleck, who plays the NYPD commissioner on the hit CBS drama, has filled up a commercial water tanker at least a dozen times from a fire hydrant in Thousand Oaks, Calif., since 2013, according to a civil complaint filed by the Calleguas Municipal Water District in Ventura County Superior Court.
The legal filing was first reported Tuesday by the online legal journal Courthouse News.
Selleck owns a 60-acre ranch and avocado farm in nearby Hidden Valley.
Calleguas Municipal Water District wants Selleck to pay at least $21,685.55 for investigators it hired and court costs. Other damages would be determined later, according to the complaint.
The water district claims it’s documented seven times when a commercial water truck filled up at a Thousand Oaks fire hydrant before taking it into “the Hidden Valley area where the Selleck property is located,” between Sept. 20, 2013, and Oct. 3, 2013, according to the complaint.
After a cease-and-desist letter was sent to Selleck and his wife on Nov. 26, 2013, the same water truck again swiped water for the actor on Dec. 16, 2013, according to the lawsuit.
The same white water truck made similar water runs again on March 23, 24, 25 and 26 of this year, the civil complaint said.
California is suffering from a historic drought and Golden State homeowners are being forced to slash water use by 25 percent.
A rep for the veteran “Magnum P.I.” actor, now in hot water, could not be immediately reached for comment Wednesday morning.
The American deep south is a unique area for many reasons, its old long established wealth or old money if you like, its culture, food, history and its very central and important part in American history. The South is as different from the East and the West coasts that they could easily be another country. The South also boasts some not so nice facts, massive prisons like Angola full of Men and Women with little hope of anything better. Death Rows build on massive prison complex next to Churches of feverish Worship. The South is of course the home of the Klan and the home of the Confederate Flag. The Rebel flags flies high over the Red Hills of Georgia, the plains of Louisiana, the hills of Tennessee and the River Boats of the Mississippi. The flag is now being talked about as part of a hate campaign against African Americans. Should it go or should it stay?
America is having a debate right now about the flag personally I think it is the wrong debate to have. After the Church shootings were 9 innocent Americans lost their lives because some nut job was able to get his hands on a gun. Time and time again America witness mass shootings in Schools, in Movies Theatres, in Navy Yards because guns are as easy to get as a bar of candy. The debate you need to have is around Second Amendment rights and gun control. And yes Racism is alive and well in the South and the Klan has not gone away. And no I don’t think the blowing away of 9 people because of the colour of their skin is right in any way shape or form, I don’t think that flag caused it. I think guns in the hands of mad and bad people do and did. Wake up America.

Greece is the home of modern democracy, the birthplace of what we should all hold very dear but often don’t. Yesterday they made good their right to democracy and like it or not they said no to Europe. So has the European project failed? I think it failed along time ago. It failed because in their desire to give us all the same horrible currency they totally forgot the Political Project that the likes of Jacques Delors and others wished to see. The Political Project has been taken over by the Monetary Project and without any safeguards or any real plan B Europe is being ran like a very bad household by people who lurch from one crisis to another in the run up to pay day. Europe is now in negative equity and to blame Greek pensioners for all their woes won’t work.
When Leeman Brothers and others starting falling like birds on a Boxing Day shoot that was the time for Europe to look up and make sure it had a plan B and a plan C. The falling of tricky Irish, Italian and Spanish banks should have made them look at how they run not just the banks but the regulators and the rating agencies who told us all was a ok. On that Saturday morning when Hank Paulson went into Leemans Board and said he was letting them die Europe’s leaders should have been listening harder. But like a really bad money manager Europe went for the Pay Day Loan option and the Greeks are now paying the full 365% interest. Time now for Europe to say bye bye to the monetary union and work on the political one, before it tares its self apart again.
So I have decided to start blogging again. You don’t have to read it but if you do that would be good. I will be doing my best to make sure you want to read it, so welcome.
